workplace psychopaths

 

Does the following person sound familiar?

> He or she can be found working inside many of Australia's businesses and corporations.

> He or she intimidates fellow workers.

> He or she exhibits impulsive behaviour

> He or she demonstrates a lack of remorse (and lack of empathy).

> He or she is glib and superficially charming

 

Then, you may have a workplace psychopath at work.


The following checklist from 'Working with Monsters' by John Clarke may help you to understand them.

Psychopathy checklist

1. Glibness/superficial charm.

2. Grandiose sense of self-worth.

3. Need for excitement.

4. Pathological lying.

5. Conning/manipulative.

6. Lack of remorse or guilt.

7. Shallow affect (emotion).

8. Callous/lack of empathy.

9. Parasitic lifestyle.

10. Poor behavioural controls.

11. Promiscuous sexual behaviour.

12. Early behaviour problems.

13. Lack or realistic, long term goals.

14. Impulsivity.

15. Irresponsibility.

16. Failure to accept responsibility for actions.

17. Many short-term marital realationships.

18. Juvenile deliquency.

19. Revocatoin of conditional release.

20. Criminal versatility.

 

Note that many people can have some of the above traits without being a psychopath. According to John Clark, a psychopath exhibits a 'cluster of the above traits'.

 

Note the characteristics listed above cannot be used to diagnose psychopathy.
